Thank you for your efforts.

please do not thank me - I myself should have done this earlier - I was more than aware of them - I actively consumed them, i did not propagate them - instead i argued that they did exist.

Now i’m just going to propagate them, because it is long past time this particular lie died.

Interesting. That hadn’t ever really occurred to me before.

It’s parallel to what I’ve been reading on twitter from various black and native American folks: It’s not my responsibility to teach you about my culture.

Some people want to teach, of course. Others are tired of being asked elementary, mundane, or personal questions.

Maybe you hadn’t thought of it because you’re not black or native American. /////////////

It certainly is not our (or any proponent of decency and dignity and education) duty to have to educate others who willfully choose not to educate themselves.

we are better off for the effort though.

I think you just hit on one of the reasons why the “it’s not my responsibility to educate” discussions hit me so hard, and I’ve had a hard time putting it into words before this. It’s true that it should be no one’s responsibility and I can acknowledge their point that it can be incredibly draining to always expect to be an ambassador regarding one’s culture.

On the other hand, observation, while it is possible to learn a lot, does have its limits. Sometimes people need to ask questions. And to lash out at someone who is genuinely interested and wants to learn isn’t going to help the cause either.

Not that I have an answer in either regard. Just thoughts.
